Mmmm...not that way on my '67. The console shifter is linked directly to the tranny with a rod linkage assembly. No connection to the steering column whatsoever. That's also what the Service Manual and Factory Parts diagrams show.
The neutral safety switch is also mounted inside the shifter mechanism - not on the column.
