People thought the same about Olds and many other name plates/brands etc. I'd be willing to venture to say the Corvette is also doomed. 09 was the worst year EVER for Corvette sales and they are saying 2010 may be half the units as last year. Not sure how much longer that name plate will hold on with sales performance like that. Maybe they will become a special order division type thing or limited production runs in the near future...
A very sad day indeed, but the new Pontiacs are nothing like the old ones. The best Pontiac was looking to be the new G8, which did not hardy get off the ground before the Government got involved . It seemed as of late the best ventures that the Pontiac motor division came up with were one that in conjunction with other companies. Pontiac Vibe,GTO, & G8 for examples.

You know honestly pontiac brand has been dead for sometime now. Kill the flag ship(firebird). Then replace it with the girlie GTO personally I am glad they stopped making pontiacs... Go to any pontiac dealership a year ago you saw nothing to appeal to the muscle based crowd. If you want a grocery getter great. You want a cobalt with a V-8 buy the gto. It sucks but they lost me when the last firebird roled off the line. I wasn't happy with the chevy powerplant based firebird but at least it had some styling. Thank you pontiac for making real cars 32 years ago. 1978 was the last year for me for pontiacs. I have owned many firebird-transams from a 67 bird to the 2002 trans am I owned 5 years ago. Never bought a new pontiac only because my finances never allowed it. But the 02TA was only 2years old when I bought it. Sorry I know I am rambling... Anyways hope if they bring back pontiac they take a different approach than what led to it's downfall this time but I believe we have lost the pontiac name forever. All we have is what we as collectors perserve.

I read somewhere that most of the high selling Buicks overseas are mainly built by Holman GM in Austrailia. So, not sure why Pontiac was scrapped in favor of Buick here, Pontiac out sold Buick domestically.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
I did my part to mark the day - I rolled my '67 out of the garage and hit the streets for a short drive.

I wonder if Pontiac had gone to a retro look with the most recent GTO, if it would have been a different story. Can you imagine if they product something that looked like a 1969 Judge, how things might of changed. Instead they decided to save money and went with Holden and produced a Grand Am looking car.

Yes it would but I think that by the time they made the GTO they were already planning the demise of the brand. Pontiac had a great V8 Grand Prix and did not adverize it. They had a high performance UTE in consideration that would have sold like mad. They could have reintroduced the Firebird on the Camaro platform and rekindled it. In the meantime they could have shifted the econo-cars and family vehicles to Chevy and concentrated on being the sport and performance brand. The problem, however, would be the enviros CAFE edicts by the government would have made Pontiac the drag on GM.
In honor of Pontiac and all it once stood for, here is how I pay my respects to the name plate. We installed two OEM parts to the interior of our 67 LeMans. One is an NOS vacuum gauge (lower right hand corner of the pic on the console) given to me for my B-day a few weeks back and the other is an OEM clock in place of the clock delete plate that drove me nuts. I hated seeing that blank gauge pod. Rally gauges coming soon!
