A smaller diameter yellow spring goes inside the blue spring as well. I'm not 100% on the color but the carbs came with 2 springs.

Gus have you seen documentation on that inner spring? I have not seen evidence of it? It is not in the service manual or the parts list. It only shows the outer spring. There is a different yellow for 2 barrel carbs.

Yes I've seen a many 2 spring set up but not factory. None of the 68's documentation from any of GM vehicles I've seen has a duel spring set up. True I feel it is safer to run two and many have been added. But the books only show one. Here is a thread when I was questioning it. Jim replied in it. https://firstgenfirebird.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=298395

Take another look. You have 2 springs. It's not blue because it's corroded now.

Take another look. You have 2 springs. It's not blue because it's corroded now. If you zoom in on the picture you can see the smaller spring inside of the larger spring. They occupy the same holes but there's two physical space Springs Nope. Single spring. No corrosion.

I only see one spring and I did zoom in.
Maybe the heat has made the paint come off over the past 47 years or someone replaced it after the first 5-10 years?

But I have see the pair more than just the single. Perhaps it came out years later. I recall the sm dia spring made the carb held tight so idle speed was maintained. I believe the lg dia spring was for secondary's. IMO of course
