I'd negotiate with your buddy on the similiar job....you will still need a van or transportation etc....and go after those contracts you are doing now! If your friends firm is stable in this climate...I would jump ship sooner than later, as it sounds like you may be laid off soon anyhow...puts you in better bargaining power as well.

I have always left employment I hated, and never looked back..and always made move for the better, even if it was for the short term..too bad I can't leave this one (as part owner LOL)

They will always need fire inspectors....pretty doubtful the underwriters will relax requirements due to the economy!
